Digital Resources presented Southern Methodist University with a broadcast design to rebuild their Universities Mustang Vision Sports Broadcast Facility. This partnership included technology upgrades for the Gerald Ford stadium, where the SMU Mustangs football team plays. It also included the Moody Auditorium where the SMU Basketball and Volleyball teams play. There is a central control room that integrates a new fiber backbone between all these facilities to offer integrated control and distributed broadcast in the new control room.
Our Digital Resources team was led by Emmy award winning broadcast engineer Mark Lauffer, and Project Managing Engineer, David Horton. The team partnered with SMU and their team that was led by Spencer Jones, Director of Mustang Vision Productions. A combined plan that was superbly executed to provide a comprehensive system that could achieve the intended goal in the middle of a worldwide Covid-19pandemic.
The overall goal for this project was to prepare SMU for broadcasting multiple sports related content for distribution broadcast in-house and to ESPN. While Mustang Vision had equipment in place for individual productions, aging technology and a disconnect in networks combined with outdated infrastructure limited the production team’s abilities to accomplish the needed growth.
Digital Resources finalized the new design for the control room and layout with emphasis on multiple shows using the existing footprint. The control room was given a complete face lift with new technical millwork and architectural lighting. DRI exceeded the expectations for SMU and ESPN, for the broadcast standard to be on par with other schools already broadcasting. This expectation led to some standard requirements which included 4K capable studio cameras, multichannel replay system, high level graphics, multi-channel digital intercom with wireless technology and a central switcher platform with loads of power to take on the heavy lifting of mixed effects required for the ESPN package.
Some key area of updates in equipment included Ross TouchDrive video switchers, with 3ME abilities, Ross Mira Replay systems, Ross Xpression Studio packages, Panasonic AK-UC3300 4K studio cameras and complementary Fujinon70X lens, Allen & Heath DLive C2500 Audio Console and Reidel Intercom matrix.
