Taylor University Selects Shure ULX-D® Wireless Microphone System
Posted on Tuesday, October 14, 2014

NILES, Ill., Oct. 14, 2014Taylor University, located in Upland, Indiana, one of the oldest evangelical Christian colleges in America, has long relied on Shure products for various campus audio needs, including supporting its 300 seat theatre. With a wireless microphone system worn out from more than a decade of continual use, this year the University decided to invest in state-of-the-art digital wireless technology. Taylor University Media Services Lead Analyst, Michael Fletcher, wanted a system that could support the theatre department’s productions, as well as several student projects throughout the year. He worked hand-in-hand with locally-based Sinewave Audio to assess the available wireless audio system options. Together the team decided on Shure ULX-D® Digital Wireless System.

It was important to Fletcher that the system selected be an investment that would last for years—a durable system with digital audio capabilities. Furthermore, his research was focused on determining where the university could get the best quality for its money. With Shure ULX-D’s Dante™ digital audio and scalable, intelligent hardware it was a clear choice for the University. The 24-bit audio clarity and solid, efficient RF performance, paired with rugged metal housings on transmitters and receivers, fit Fletcher’s needs for premium audio quality and solid construction. Today, the University is operating with 16 channels of ULX-D, in the form of four ULXD4Q Quad Channel Digital Wireless Receivers.

“I love the ULX-D quad receivers. We save an incredible amount of space using the compact quad receivers. With the antenna distribution, we need less than half the rack space previously required,” commented Fletcher.

Adapted from Shure Axient technology, the optional ULX-D rechargeable accessories eliminate the need for disposable batteries while offering extended run time and metering accuracy in hours and minutes. The advanced power management provides Shure ULX-D transmitters with more than 11 hours of performance time. Additionally, for the student users, ULX-D’s Ethernet networking enables streamlined setup across multiple receivers, while integration with Wireless Workbench® 6 allows for greater control.

Fletcher added, “The rechargeable batteries are a phenomenal bonus. The recharging stations help ensure the gear is ready to go for students. In our environment, where there are a number of operators handling the receivers, the rechargeability helps prevent excessive wear and tear because the students aren’t constantly changing batteries. We are now looking at purchasing additional Shure ULX-D Digital Wireless Systems for our chapel auditorium.”
