On New Year’s Eve, Shanghai traditionally is the setting for a dazzling display of light shows and fireworks. Visual spectacles on the ‘Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation’ building or the Customs House at the Bund waterfront regularly appear in TV news items on celebrations around the world. This year, however, a new spectacle, set in the Putuo district, took Shanghai’s center stage.
The 100m-tall clock tower in the Meichuan shopping plaza was turned into a lively 3D extravaganza. The project was the first-ever outdoor projection mapping in China to cover all four sides of one building in a seamless display. Barco cooperated closely with local integration partner Shanghai LEFEDV Showtech Co. to realize this achievement, covering the entire cycle, from project design right up to on-site support.
No fewer than twenty of Barco's FLM-HD20, 20,000 lumen projectors were set up on the rooftops and terraces of surrounding buildings. Advanced image processing, including image blending, rendering and correction, helped mix the individual signals into one impressive 360°-display. Despite challenging conditions, including cold temperatures and a luminous environment, the Barco solutions lived up to their world-class reputation.
Hundreds of people gathered in the square to witness the visual feast on New Year's Eve. The 3D spectacle brought the characteristic architecture of the building to life in a subtle interplay of colors, animations and music. Particularly impressive was the interactive nature of the projections, as images and colors changed in response to the shouts of the audience.
Mrs He Jianhui, Deputy Director of Shanghai LEFEDV Showtech Co., comments:" Producing a pixel mapping project on a 100m-high tower was exceptionally challenging. But, thanks to the crystal-clear image performance and blending of Barco’s projectors, we achieved what we set out to do: we gave the audience a truly extraordinary 3D-show to usher in the new year."
